Harry Bertoia
Harry Bertoia was born in 1915 in San Lorenzo, Udine, Italy. Bertoia’s masterful career began in 1930 where he attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art. As a student, his work gained quick recognition which allowed him to become a professor and department head at the Academy. He moved on to work for Charles and Ray Eames and later developed his own studio.
As a sculptor, Bertoia created abstract freestanding metal works, some of which resonated with sound when touched or had moving elements that chimed in the wind. One of his most famous furniture designs was the Diamond Chair which he developed when he was only thirty-seven. Its organic, human-friendly form helped to create a new look for modernism.
